Congratulations goes out to Dena Luna, who was recently named at the permanent Director of the Office of Black Student Achievement!
Please welcome
Dena Luna
as MPS permanent Office of Black Student Achievement Director!
Prior to coming to MPS, Dena led the Teen Thrive and Career Pathways programs with The YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities as the executive director for the association. Dena also has a legal background and is a licensed attorney.
Ms. Luna came to MPS in 2019 to contribute to the expansion of the office from The Office of Black Male Student Achievement to The O
ffice of Black Student Achievement, expanding their work to include Queens. She served as the Educational Equity Coordinator on the team.
Under Ms. Luna's leadership, as Interim Director, OBSA has expanded to serve students in middle school and elementary sites. Additionally, OBSA has focused intently on supporting the MPS Strategic Plan and continuing to tear down institutional barriers. A few highlights from this year under her leadership include 100% of Black students working with OBSA were able to participate in commencement and graduate from MPS (through the amazing work of Zander Tsadwa) and professional development opportunities for staff and engagement events for families have also expanded exponentially.
Throughout her career, she has focused on working
with and serving Black students, families and communities in various capacities and considers herself an unapologetic advocate for Black students and families.
Her passion and skill for youth development, community engagement, strategic thinking and program creation/refinement as assets to her role as Director of The Office of Black Student Achievement. She is humbled to take on the role permanently and continue the amazing work the office is known for.
Please join me in welcoming Dena Luna as the official Director of Office of Student Achievement! I am so proud of her leadership this past year, and I greatly look forward to the future with her in this position!
Thank you
Dr. Aimee Fearing
